Red Mountain Sin Yoon Loong White Coffee is in an industrial area far from the touristy part of Ipoh. It’s also hidden in a warehouse!
If you’re not sure whether this eatery is worth driving to, read on!
Driving Here
From Ipoh Old Town, it’ll take approximately 20 minutes to reach this place using Jalan Lahat which passes through Menglembu.
There’s no visitor parking at this eatery. Instead, you can park outside the compound on either side of the road.
PS: If you happen to be in the area known as Station 18, this place is about 10 minutes’ drive away!
What It’s Like To Dine Here
After we parked our car, we walked over to the eatery and were immediately guided by a waiter. He showed us the different seating areas indoors and outdoors. We chose to sit indoors since it felt cooler.
There’s no air-conditioning inside but they have electric coolers which they fill with ice, exhaust fans, and ceiling fans. It was comfortable enough, but we will note that we came on a particularly cool day for Ipoh standards!
PS: Wear long pants or mosquito repellent if you want to dine here. There are mosquitoes hiding among all the plants and wood.
Soft jazz plays in the background and the whole place is furnished with timber including the huge wooden panels that serve as a divider between the indoor and outdoor seating areas.
Another huge wooden slab serves as a large dining table in the middle of the restaurant. The seats in this main area of the restaurant are of bar stool height. There are live plants in water on each table.
Note: If that’s not your preference, there are other tables and chairs of regular height further in the restaurant.
Despite being a weekday, there were quite a lot of customers already. More came in while we were eating.
What We Ordered Here
After spending a few minutes studying their menu, we chose 2 mains and an iced coffee. The menu is a little tricky since they have fancy names for some of the mains. They do have small but useful descriptions of the ingredients though.
We placed our orders by scanning a QR code at our table. It didn’t take long for the first main to appear after the iced coffee came.
I can’t remember the exact name, but this dish featured their signature cloud noodles in peanut soup with homemade chicken meatballs, shredded fried egg, siew bak choy and tau fu pok. This dish was plain tasting but I liked it. The noodles resemble wanton skins or soggy ravioli more than noodles and they have a subtle pleasant flavor to them.
The second main came along shortly after the first. This was nasi lemak served with acar and rendang curry chicken. The portion of rice was small, but the rice has a great texture to it. The acar was not as strong tasting as we would have liked but the rendang curry chicken was wonderfully fragrant and tasty. It is not overly spicy (for us, anyways).
There are more experimental options in the menu as well even though we didn’t go for them – like croissant with rendang curry chicken or nasi lemak roll (only available on Fridays to Sundays)!
As for the iced coffee we ordered, this was aromatic and smooth. There are actually many different variations of coffee and non-caffeinated drinks on the menu. Such as their seasonal durian coffee. Or the coconut coffee with santan and shredded coconut!
The dessert menu is very interesting as well – they even have durian with sago (seasonal item)!
Facilities
The toilets and surau (prayer room) are housed in a separate building from the eatery. This building serves as an event space.
Further along at the back of this building are a lot of plants and if you go past them, you’ll find yourself at the timber warehouse. It looks like they have woodworking shops on the weekends too but since we went on a weekday, there wasn’t anyone here.
Beside the eatery and by the coffee making station, is an outdoor bar of sorts. We could smell the smoke from their in-house coffee roasting clearly from here.
At the front of the eatery at the main gate, is a tea/coffee tasting station with benches. We think that this is a waiting area for the eatery for the days that there is a full-house.
Pricing
If you want to dine here, expect it to be pretty costly. Our meal for two with 2 mains and just 1 drink already cost us more than RM40.
The cheapest drinks on the menu cost RM5 and the cheapest mains cost ~RM15. Desserts and their specialty drinks can cost RM13 each.
Conclusion
We’d only come back to Red Mountain Sin Yoon Loong White Coffee if we were entertaining friends and family from out of town. Or if we happened to be going south-side of Ipoh. Because it’s too far from where we normally roam.
If you happen to be in Ipoh for a visit, you could consider coming to this eatery if you find the setting charming. It’s expensive but the food is not bad – much better than we expected anyways!
Papan Village
Red Mountain Sin Yoon Loong White Coffee is on the way to Papan Village (~12 minutes’ away) and if that’s something you’re interested in, we think you should see both on the same day!
Memories Ipoh by Morel Restaurant
If you can’t make it to Red Mountain Sin Yoon Loong White Coffee, there’s another similar looking eatery right in town that you can visit instead. Except Memories Ipoh by Morel Restaurant serves western cuisine – they have wood fired pizza!
