About Jeff Lee Kitchen
Jeff Lee Kitchen is one of the Chinese restaurant chains operated by the three Lee brothers.
Although they are siblings, each restaurant has its distinct cooking style. And each restaurant also serves different dishes from the others.
Jeff Lee Kitchen is near a wet market and a large football field. And by 6pm, the restaurant is full to the brim. This means you can expect to queue in line beyond that time.
To avoid standing in line for an hour, make a reservation in advance to secure your seat.
The dishes are tasty and robustly flavored without that heavy MSG after-feel. And they’re reasonably priced too.
Even foodies from other communities and as far as Singapore come for their Chinese food.
Ease Of Parking At Jeff Lee Kitchen
The alleys surrounding the restaurant are narrow. Thus, at busy times, it may be difficult to find a parking space near the restaurant.
But there is an open area in front of the restaurant where you can park on the street.
If you’re dining with someone who has difficulty walking, let them exit at the entrance first.
Ambiance At Jeff Lee Kitchen
Jeff Lee Kitchen’s interior is simple. The decor resembles that of a typical Chinese restaurant.
The two-story corner restaurant has rows of large round tables that seat 12 people each. The restaurant is air-conditioned and the ambiance while comfortable is not particularly exciting.
Tables are quite close together. And the restaurant can get quite noisy when it is full.
So, it’s a place where the focus is on the delicious food and where you’ll be happy to scoot off after your meal.
Signature Dishes At Jeff Lee Kitchen
Jeff Lee Kitchen’s signature Standing Chicken is a sight to behold. It features a whole bird skewered and hung upside down for guests to devour.
The chicken skin is crispy perfection while the meat remains juicy and tender. It tastes best with the special chili sauce that rounds out the flavor.
Note: Be warned that the standing chicken comes straight from the oven. So it can be very hot.
Devour the dish with your bare hands! There are scissors and disposable gloves that you can use to cut up the chicken.
Pei Pa Duck is another signature dish at Jeff Lee Kitchen. A heavenly layer of super crispy duck skin under a thin layer of the fat melts with each bite. The meat is tender and moist without being gamey or tough.
Other Dishes At Jeff Lee Kitchen
Since it was a family reunion with relatives from near and far, we sampled some of their signature dishes. As well as lesser-known ones.
First up was the Paku Pakis salad. This dish stood out for its freshness and excellent balance of tangy and sweet flavors.
The crunchy ferns are in a zesty lime and lemon sauce with crispy fried dried shrimp for texture too.
But everyone agreed that the crispy pork belly with soy sauce was good. Better even than their signature-standing chicken!
Next, the mushroom treasure bowl is a wonderful surprise in creativity and presentation. It is a medley of mushrooms in a pumpkin bowl. It is the natural sweetness of the pumpkin sauce that makes this a hearty yet sweet vegetarian dish.
The spinach in egg gravy didn’t last long on the table either. The tender, non-fibrous shoots are in a thick and clear egg sauce. A sprinkle of salted egg yolk on top adds a touch of savory to the dish.
We tried the stir-fried chicken with scallions too and it was more of a miss than a hit. The chicken tasted like leftover standing chicken from the day before. The meat was still fresh and flavorful. But you need a little more force to tear the dry meat apart with the cutlery.
Steamed claypot fish didn’t disappoint. The tilapia chunks are in an aromatic clear gravy, with onions, garlic, and scallions. The meat is not overcooked and pairs well with the tasty sauce.
Pricing At Jeff Lee Kitchen
Prices are quite reasonable on the whole. And the 8 dishes we ordered cost a little less than RM400.
It was a fulfilling feast to be sure. Since we had an early dinner, we did not meander for long after the meal as the crowd grew larger and larger.
Conclusion
Jeff Lee Kitchen has a unique flair and homely food at a fraction of the price.
Their dishes are pleasantly different from other typical Chinese restaurants. They are full of natural flavors with high-quality ingredients.
The location may not be as trendy and is somewhat obscure. But if you’re in the mood to explore new culinary discoveries, make a note of this restaurant.
