The Red Beanbag In Mutiara Damansara, Petaling Jaya

The Red Beanbag at Mutiara Damansara is open early for breakfast. Because of this, we decided to stop here for brunch with friends before heading to Zoo Negara.

But before you even step into this café in Kuala Lumpur though, you can see that it has high standards when it comes to aesthetics.

If you happen to go after 9am on a weekend, there’s a long queue for The Red Beanbag too. Is it worth the hype? Read our thoughts about The Red Beanbag here.

About The Red Beanbag

With strong Australian cafe-style vibes, The Red Beanbag began at Publika in 2011. After the pandemic, the café/roastery has recently moved over to Mutiara Damansara, bringing along their specialty coffee and pork-free brunch-heavy menu.

On this menu, general favorites include their eggs benedict and French toast.

This new space has a children’s play area upstairs. There are nursing facilities upstairs too. As well as a pet-friendly space outdoors.

Ease Of Parking At The Red Beanbag

If you manage to get here before 9am, there’s a lot of shaded street parking in front of The Red Beanbag. Even on a weekend.

But after 9am, there’s a real struggle for parking (i.e., limited roadside parking).

Ambiance At The Red Beanbag

A large front door, high ceilings, ample lighting (both ambient and natural), and generously spaced seating give The Red Beanbag an impressive appearance.

The interior is beautifully done with a cohesive theme and plenty of wooden elements. This includes a lovely children’s playground upstairs too.

Depending on where you sit in the café though, the air conditioning can be very cool or inadequate. But seating at The Red Beanbag comfortably accommodates different group sizes.

And in our opinion, ambiance is where The Red Beanbag scores highest.

Service At The Red Beanbag

We came around 8:45am on a Saturday and a friendly guy cheerfully greeted us. He promptly showed us to a table and handed out menus.

We have small eaters in our group and when we asked about portion sizes, he jokingly (or not) let us know that he could eat 3. This seemed very possible since he was a big guy.

Each customer gets a glass of drinking water so you don’t have to get drinks necessarily. The food does take time to come though. It took 20 minutes for the first dish to come, and it wasn’t even 9am (i.e., peak time) on yet.

Eventually, we got all our orders (~30 minutes after ordering).

Food At The Red Beanbag

Two of us got the Eggs Benedict (one with turkey ham and one with beef bacon). We also ordered the Avo Hummus (this is meant to be a dish for sharing) and one Eggs My Way.

Truly though, none of these dishes were satisfying even though they look tasty.

The taste of the hummus is quite bland – but hummus is bland, in general. The best of the dishes we ordered is probably the Eggs My Way – how can you screw up eggs and toast anyways?

Eggs Benedict is something that most people get at The Red Beanbag. But we can’t see why:

To start with, the eggs were strangely kind of sour. And the overall taste is underwhelming. The only bits that we particularly liked in this dish were the deep-fried leaves that are just toppings!

PS: We only ordered one coffee (Ethopian) and it was just fair although it has distinct flavors. Note that we’re not coffee connoisseurs.

Pricing At The Red Beanbag

Expect to spend more than RM30 per person if you’re getting something to eat and drink at The Red Beanbag.

We find the portions for the Eggs Benedict and Eggs My Way to be decently sized.

But with the Avo Hummus, you only get 3 small pieces of sourdough bread and a very disproportionate serving of hummus (i.e. you would need a lot more than 3 pieces of bread to go with it).

Conclusion

This being our first experience at The Red Beanbag, we are disappointed with the food and service. Service is slow despite the café having many staff. And the food is not appetizing.

We do not expect to return again if we are in the area. It may be that we just got unlucky with our visit but seeing that we paid quite a lot to dine here (and 3 of us did not order drinks), it’s very off putting.

We really hope that The Red Beanbag steps up their serving times and food as this is a very attractive café space that is both family and pet friendly.
