Most shops sell their ayam garam or yim kok kai as takeaways. You can bring some salt baked chicken from Ipoh back home if you get the freeze-dried version!

Unfortunately, most salted chicken shops do not have halal certificates though shops like Aun Kheng Lim may abide by the rules using non-halal ingredients and keeping their equipment pork-free.

1. Aun Kheng Lim Salted Chicken (Main Branch)
Aside from their delicious free-range chicken, you’ll be impressed with their drive-through service and overall efficiency to churn out so many in a day!
All are nicely packed for their customers in their iconic bright red boxes and plastic bags.
There is usually a queue but you won’t have to wait very long!

2. Ipoh Kheng Lim Salted Chicken
Ipoh Kheng Lim Salted Chicken is in Gunung Rapat which means you don’t have to drive into Ipoh New Town to get salted chicken in Ipoh!
If you buy the frozen chickens, you can keep them for up to a month!
Preparing them for consumption is easy! Just steam for 5 minutes at medium heat with the wrapper on or reheat in the microwave without the wrapper!

They sell vacuum packed chicken too as well as other local food that make good Ipoh souvenirs!

4. Happiness Authentic Salted Chicken (囍洋洋盐焗鸡)
Happiness Authentic Salted Chicken enjoys a strategic location just opposite Lou Wong Restoran Tauge Ayam.
They take up 4 shop lots for all the packaged goods (mostly food) that they sell! Including salted chicken! You can buy Ipoh pastries, pomelo and salt-baked chicken all under the same roof!
5. Feng Weng Salted Chicken (Kedai Makanan & Minuman Sin Tat Seng)
This main branch of this renown salted chicken shop is just across from Ipoh Funny Mountain Soya Beancurd! They used to go by the name, Ayam Garam Tat Seng.
Aside from the yummy chicken, you can get roast or smoked duck here. And some pork dishes! Their salt-baked chicken is full of flavor but salty so it goes great with porridge!

6. Canton Salted Chicken (广东盐焗鸡)
Canton Salted Chicken is 2 minutes’ drive from Bercham’s renown Cendol Wawasan:
The chicken is well prepared but stocks are limited. So it’s best to make a pre-order first!
7. Happy Delicious Salted Chicken (福禄寿盐焗鸡)
Starting out from a humble stall at Kafe Zun Seng Fatt, Jalan Bandar Timah:
Happy Delicious Salted Chicken now has its own shop lot on Jalan Theatre in striking red!
Their signature eight treasure salt-baked chicken sells for RM22.
Smoked duck is available too. And if you can’t finish a half or whole chicken/duck, you can order individual drumsticks!
This salted chicken sits right with those that prefer a stronger herbal flavor.

8. Wan Li Xiang Salted Chicken and Salted Duck
For a well-balanced herbal taste that isn’t too salty or strong, you can try the eight treasure salt-baked chicken by Wan Li Xiang –their signature dish. The herbal flavor is mild compared to other stores.
But they have a few other variations besides the original – Ginseng or black pepper.
And if you feel like having salted duck instead of chicken, they have both!
9. Chef Uni Ipoh Ayam Garam (Halal)
You can pick up frozen salted chicken that is halal from the convenience store at the Petronas petrol station on Jalan Raha Dihilir.
They use kampung chicken. Chef Uni runs a halal catering service in Ipoh.
